HTTP – The SoCS’s First GSLC

Warning : There are so many abbreviations in this post, so bear with me!

Right now you must be wondering that the title makes no sense at all. However, for those who have read all my previous posts, you should’ve known that SoCS stands for “School of Computer Science” while GSLC stands for “Guided Self-Learning Class”. Then what does HTTP stands for?

“H” on HTTP stands for “Himpunan Mahasiswa Teknik Informatika”, shortened as “HIMTI”. HIMTI is a student community which copes all students from SoCS faculty. This means all students from Computer Science (TI), Mobile App & Tech (MAT), Game App & Tech (GAT), Cyber Security (CS), Computer Science Double Degree (TI+Math and TI+Statistics), and Master Track Computer Science (MTI) are officially members of HIMTI. Well, actually they made it into official members thanks to HTTP.

Okay, on more serious notes. HTTP I’m talking about is not “Hypertext Transfer Protocol”. HTTP stands for “HIMTI Togetherness & Top Performances”. HTTP is basically an annual gathering activity for all HIMTI new recruits, so HTTP 2016 is exclusive for Binusian SoCS 2020. HTTP was held on September 10th, 2016 at BPPT II Building from 9AM til finish. In order to attend this event, a ticket costs 150,000 Rupiah is needed. Below are the benefits of purchasing HTTP ticket :

  1. You will be able to attend Pengenalan Bahasa C (PBC) course, which is a course for learning basic concept of C programming language.
  2. You will be given HIMTI Exclusive Pin, Merchandise, and HIMTI Kit (series of useful software for supporting your study in SoCS).
  3. You will earn SAT Points.
  4. And of course you will be able to join and enjoy HTTP itself, including free transport and lunch.

HTTP 2016 rundown :

  1. Performance by Peanut Butter Band
  2. Welcoming Speech from Vice Rector, Program Leaders, and HIMTI Presidents
  3. Solo Performance by Adam Sidqon
  4. Games
  5. Lunch Break
  6. Talk show by Alumni Binusian 2016 (Computer Science program)
  7. Games
  8. Visualization Drama
  9. Hexion Introduction
  10. Break
  11. Modern Dance by Revolution
  12. Performance by Vibing High Band
  13. HIMTI Binusian 2020 Inauguration
  14. Doorprize Announcement
  15. Performance by DJ Angello

These are my personal impression and suggestions (maybe can be used in HTTP 2017 and so on) :

For me, 150.000 Rupiah is worth for all the benefits I can get. I must say that HTTP is nicely done. Too bad they had to skip the last part of Zootopia ahaha… Anyway, the performances were great, especially the visualization drama, which was TRULY entertaining. The welcoming speech and introduction to Program Leaders and Team should be no longer than 30 mins (else it would rise boredom). And for the lunch, well it would be perfect if the spoon was a little more solid to fight the food. The talk show was nice and motivating. Games were good. Hexion introduction was cool , I’m looking forward to Hexion itself. About the breaks, either they should be briefer a bit (to save time), or add more stands for us to explore. The doorprize announcement was bad though because I didn’t get any (just joking!). On top of everything else, I’m proud to be an official member of HIMTI after the inauguration.

End of story : HTTP is actually a field trip GSLC, and this article is actually the assignment. Therefore, thank you for reading my assignment! 🙂

Experienced : FEP – Academic Orientation

This post is added to answer the question : What do you do during AO (Academic Orientation)?

You sure remember the moment of your first week at school, right? You get to know what’s your long-term classmates looks like, what’s your Math teacher looks like, and what will you study in Math subject for the whole semester. After knowing those things, usually you will start learning Math from its basics, receiving your first assignment, and finally having your very first Math exam (which is not really that fascinating).

Well, those memories are actually similar to AO, except now you aren’t a high school student. AO is basically a learning simulation in university. You will know how students study in university. During AO however, the assignments and activities are still in the minimum amount (most of Student Organizations still haven’t started yet), so you will have plenty of leisure time. Let me tell you that this is the best period to make new friends, as these new friends will grab their weapons and fight together with you for the next four years. You can begin with ones who were in the same class during GO, then start befriending everyone else.

Jumping to the conclusion :

Overall, FEP – AO is a nice start for all fresh students. It really helps preparing students to the real campus life while giving a head start to complete the whole studying materials. Enjoy this sweet period while it lasts, my friends! 🙂

Experienced : FEP – General Orientation

“It’s always the new experience you remember the most.”

If I recall correctly (which I certainly do!), I started my first day of General Orientation (GO) on August 22nd, 2016. It took place at Syahdan Campus, room L3D and began at 9 AM. The dresscode for the first day was white formal shirt and black slacks with black or white sneakers. I waited outside of the classroom and started “collecting” some new friends, just like everybody was doing. Then I realized that most of my classmates aren’t in the same program as I do. The introvert part of me then said “don’t waste your time making friends with all of them, which will be useless. At least you acknowledge their names and what do they look like”. So I did.

The hall became more crowded when I saw seniors walking through wearing alma mater jacket. Six of them enter room L3D and they turned out to be my BCs. Then with the other forty eight classmates, I entered the room to begin Briefing session. Introductions passed (a little awkwardly) and suddenly we were all a part of class EBN-10. Thus began the journey of GO with me as one of the buddies. For six days we laughed together and got bored together as classmates, but I’m willing to bet that I’m not the only one who really enjoyed GO.

To all EBN 10 : Sukma! Sukses Mantap!

Let’s get to the main part :

Overall, FEP – GO went smoothly and well as expected. This FEP part really matches with the title : General Orientation, which taught the general things you need to know as a new student of Binus University. I personally think Binus is the best university if the university quality is based solely by its GO. Unlike the other universities which “bully” new students with lots of physical activities and assignments, Binus offers an efficient, to-the-point-GO. However, there are little things that I want to add as advices.

a. Delivering GO materials with powerpoint is sure an efficient way, but students sometimes forgot some parts of the presentation if the powerpoint itself isn’t distributed to all students. It may be more effective if the buddies are given the FEP book sooner, so then BC can deliver the materials according to the book (BC explains, we read). The FEP book also need to be more complete in order to do this (for example it should contain the function of SCDC, SAC, AOC, etc).

b. Buddies should be given a sample (most recommended : a video) about the components of Binus Maya with actual content in them (maybe use senior’s record as an example). Trust me, it’s quite difficult to differentiate which shows this and which shows that while your Binus Maya components are still empty (as a fresh student).

c. I prefer more tours in the campus during GO! Don’t you guys agree? 🙂

FEP – Academic Orientation

Academic Orientation (AO) is the second part of FEP.

a. Goal : Helping fresh Binusian to know more about each program’s curriculum, study skills, learning materials, and what a lecture feels like.

b. AO is held for two weeks, starting a week after Inauguration (September 5th until 17th). As a college simulation, AO is really useful to fresh students in order to adapt with new environment. Starting from AO, students are divided into their own programs. Each programs have different class schedule with various courses. Despite this division which results new classmates from the same program, the Buddy-BC system will still continue.

c. During AO, students learn and also experience four type of classes :

  1. Big Class : Held in auditorium, big classes usually consist of large number of students from the same faculty or when students from various programs have the same course. In big classes, lecturers give theory-based lessons in general.
  2. Small Class : Held in classrooms, small classes usually consist of students from the same program (equivalent to classes in high schools). In small classes, lecturers give theory-based lessons more specific/detail. Students are encouraged to discuss and raise questions (if needed) about the lesson during this small class, as it’s more effective studying in smaller groups than having a big class. Theory exams are held in small class.
  3. Lab Class : Held in laboratories, lab classes usually consist of students from the same program. In lab classes, lecturers give practical-based lesson, and students will be able to apply their theory using computers. Practical exams are held in lab class.
  4. GSLC (Guided Self-Learning Class) : Held in virtual location, GSLC is basically online learning via Binus Maya. In GSLC, students will be given assignment from lecturer, and also they may discuss with classmates in a forum. GSLC can also be a field trip (educational trip away from campus) with assignment added.

Organizational Skill

Life at university isn’t enough only by attending lectures and get good grades. Students must develop both of their hard skill and soft skill. Hard skill maybe lets someone attend a job interview, but soft skill determines their position later in that job. This soft skill is related to organizational skill, which is needed in almost every job. In order to improve organizational skill, Student Organizations are the best solution. Students are able to develop their organizational skill by attending those organizations and even better : be part of the activist.

Binus University also motivates students to improve their organizational skill by adding SAT points (Student Activity Transcript) as one of the requirements for them to graduate. SAT points basically determine the activeness of university students. In order for a student to graduate from Binus University, he/she must have at least 120 SAT points, which are lot easier to gain if a student becomes activists in an organization. Having a nice organizational skill is indeed the key to the future.

FEP – General Orientation

General Orientation (GO) is the first part of FEP.

a. Goal : Helping fresh Binusian to know more about Binus University environment, rules and registration, Student Organizations, and more general university stuff.

b. At Kemanggisan, GO is divided into 5 waves / batches : ABN, BBN, CBN, DBN, and EBN. Each GO batch lasts for one week, starting with ABN and following with BBN, CBN, DBN, and EBN consecutively from July 18th until August 27th. One batch of GO consists of approximately 500 students.

c. Buddy-BC system applied. Starting from GO, every students are called “Buddy”. Buddies will be divided into classes (approx. 50 buddies in a class) and they will be coordinated by their seniors called “Buddy Coordinator” or “BC”.

d. Below are the activities that buddies do during GO :

  1. Briefing : Buddies receive briefings from their BCs about FEP (activities, dresscodes, rules, etc). Buddies are also taught how to sing the anthem of Binus University and Binusian.
  2. Binusian Journey : Buddies learn about Binusian Journey (what will they do until they graduate).
  3. Perkuliahan, Ujian, Registrasi : Buddies learn about learning methods, attending exams, and doing registration.

Introduction

Let’s be honest : This blog was made for academic purpose – in order to complete one of two assessments during this Freshmen Enrichment Program. However, I hope this blog will become “more than an assessment”.

First of all, I’m not a blogger, but I will do my best. My name is Andrew and currently I am a fresh student of MTI which stands for “Master Track Teknik Informatika” or “Master Track Computer Science”. It is a program from “School of Computer Science (SoCS)” faculty in Binus Kemanggisan. In this blog, I will give some information about Freshmen Enrichment Program (FEP) from my own experience. Please note that I’m not a Global Class student. However, the content of this blog is using English to practice my English Writing/Blogging skill. I sincerely apologize if there’s any incorrect grammar/spelling. Enjoy the blog!

Just another Binusian blogger,

Andrew
